Laurel et Ian sont de la région de Taranaki. Ils ont acheté cette terre il y a plusieurs années et ont magnifiquement rénové une partie de ce village abandonné. Situé sur la Forgotten World Highway, ce village a été abandonné par ses habitants à la suite d'innondations massives et de l'arrêt du service de train qui desservait tout le long de cette route. Il y avait une école, des églises et des maisons ainsi que des halls et des magasins.
Laurel et Ian ont d'abord rénové l'école afin d'y vivre en attendant de construire cette maison. Ils ont aussi planté un magnifique et immense verger qui leur fournit une abondance incroyable de fruits. Ils sont aussi autonomes en eau et en énergie (grâce au solaire). Quand quelqu'un a mis sur les circuits de vélos de NZ la Forgotten World Highway, ils ont été approché afin de voir s'ils ne pourraient pas mettre à disposition l'école comme auberge pour des cyclistes et c'est ainsi que la Cycle Inn de Purangi est née.
Laurel and Ian are from the Taranaki region. They bought the land some years back and beautifully renovated this abandonned village. Located on the Forgotten World Highway, this village was left by its inhabitants following several floods as well as the stoppage of the railway service going all along this area. It had a school, churches and houses as well as halls and stores.
Laurel and Ian first renovated the school to live inside while they built their own house. They also planted an absolutely magnificient and huge orchard providing an incredible abundance of fruits.
They are also fully self-sufficient in water and energy (through solar). When someone put the Forgotten World Highway on a map of cycle trails, they were asked if they would use the school as a cyclist inn and that is how the Purangi Cycle Inn was born.
Il est intéressant de mentionner les incroyables talents de designer et mécano de Ian qui a construit son propre bateau en fibre de verre. Un bateau qui se replie pour rentrer sur la remorque et dont le design est inspiré des pirogues polynésiennes. Il a tout fait lui-même, la création des pans de matériaux en fibre de verre et carbone, la coupe du bois, l'assemblage, la peinture, le mat...TOUT a été fait dans son garage. C'est un témoignage assez incroyable de ses talents d'artisan !
It is worth to mention the incredible mechanical skills of Ian who built his own glass-fiber boat who folds in order to fit on a trailer and its design is inspired by the polynesian canoes. He did all this, the glass-fiber and carbon material preparation, the cutting up of the wood, the assembly, the painting, the mast...EVERYTHING in his shed. That is a great testament to how resourceful and skillful of a craftsman he is !
